Break Down The Walls

It feels completely insane to me that this even needs to be said, but Black Lives Matter.

The fact that we have to say it shows how broken our system is in America. Why in the modern world, do we need to be reminded that people of color are our brothers and sisters, sons and daughters, wives and husbands, neighbors and co workers? And why are they are not being treated as equals? Here is the secret that no one talks about in the white community. Nothing has changed. We are taught that slavery or Jim Crow is in the past. That the black community has had freedom and equal rights for ages. This is simply not true. I am no expert but I know this. Education is not equal. Job opportunity is not equal. Safety is not equal.

Very simply I will say this. While politicians debate how equal we all are, someone's life is being threatened for simply being black. There is nothing anyone can say to me to convince me that this is somehow OK. We are told that our laws prove that there is no problem in this country. We are told that somehow the fault of the people being killed is their own. This is a national crisis, tied to lack of education and bigotry, in and around a system that still views people of color as disposable, no different than when they first set foot on this continent as slaves.

I know many people don't think it is our place to voice our opinion on this matter. I disagree. Those of us with businesses who create graphics or speak to people through our various media channels have a responsibility to address these issues. Especially those of us who like to capitalize on our history of free thinking, creative thinking and on the rebel attitude. How punk are we if we don't put our money where our mouth is from time to time.
